EastLink will deliver direct benefits to Victoria of more than $10 billion and has created thousands of jobs across the State.
An independent study conducted by The Allen Consulting Group in 2006, The Economic Impact of EastLink (PDF 1.47MB), found that EastLink would bring enormous economic benefits to Victoria including:
- the creation of around 7,550 extra jobs during construction and 6,500 jobs during operation, including more than 2,000 extra jobs in the Scoresby corridor;
- significant travel time savings for users of EastLink and users of existing arterial roads;
- significant savings on fuel and vehicle operating costs; and
- a $15 billion boost to Victoria's gross state product over the life of the Project.
Expenditure on EastLink peaked at more than $100 million for a single month on several occasions. This level of expenditure is unprecedented in the road construction industry and was a boon for local suppliers.
Industrial and commercial centres along the EastLink corridor form the lifeblood of the Victorian economy, generating more than 40 per cent of the State's manufacturing output.
To cater for existing and future industrial growth, the $65 million toll-free Dandenong Bypass was included in the Project to enhance access for freight.
