Public transport initiatives built into EastLink's design and construction include -

• Wider outer shoulders and increased lateral clearance under bridges to cater for future bus services;
• Provision for future bus stops on ramps;
• Bus priority at interchanges;
• Provision for a third track on the Belgrave/Lilydale rail line bridge;
• Provision for a third and fourth track on the Dandenong rail line bridge;
• Provision for a wide median that could accomodate future heavy rail south of the Dandenong rail line; and
• Provision for a wide median that could accomodate future public transport in the median between the Dandenong rail line and Maroondah Highway.
